MELAKA, Aug 18 (Bernama) -- The Peninsular Malay Students Federation (GPMS) has been urged to befriend non-Malay students to assist the government in strengthening Bahasa Malaysia as the national language.

Information Minister Datuk Seri Zainuddin Maidin said the government's efforts in promoting Bahasa Malaysia had not been successful as jingoism was prevalent among some people who believed that the language was only for the Malays.

"Bahasa Malaysia has been projected as only for the Malay community. This is such a narrow approach," he told reporters after opening the GPMS's 57th annual general meeting here today.

Present were GPMS president Datuk Reezal Merican Naina Merican and Melaka GPMS chairman Datuk Ab Rahaman Ab Karim.

Zainuddin said as the oldest body representing Malay students, GPMS' struggle should be universal in nature.

"It's important for the GPMS to think and act wisely and have a vision of the future," he said.

The minister said GPMS should study why the spirit of patriotism seemed to be waning among the younger generation.

Earlier, in his speech, Zainuddin said the government was committed to encouraging the people to master knowledge which was a prerequisite in the nation's march towards progress.

He noted that the education sector never failed to receive the biggest allocation in the country's budget from the early days of independence till now.
